Lactobacillus Gasseri for Weight Loss: What the Human Evidence Actually Shows
Lactobacillus gasseri is one of the few probiotic strains with multiple randomized human trials behind its weight management claims. The evidence is real, but its details matter considerably for anyone evaluating products based on it. Understanding what the studies actually measured, who they enrolled, and how they delivered the probiotic shapes what conclusions can reasonably be drawn.

The SBT2055 Clinical Evidence
The weight-loss evidence for L. gasseri belongs almost entirely to one specific strain: SBT2055. The primary trial is a 12-week, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study in 87 Japanese adults with higher body mass index (BMI) (24.2–30.7 kg/m2), in which participants consumed 200g per day of fermented milk either containing SBT2055 or without it.1
Results in the active group, compared to control:
- Abdominal visceral fat area: −4.6% from baseline (P\<0.01)
- Subcutaneous fat area: −3.3% from baseline (P\<0.01)
- Body weight, BMI, and waist and hip circumferences: all significantly reduced
A follow-up trial enrolled 210 Japanese adults and tested whether the effects held at lower colony-forming unit (CFU) concentrations.2 Both lower doses (10⁶ and 10⁷ cfu/g) produced significant reductions in abdominal visceral fat, confirming that the effect was not exclusive to the highest dose used in the original study.
Taken together, these are among the cleaner examples of strain-level, human, placebo-controlled evidence for visceral fat reduction in the probiotic literature.
What the Evidence Tells You About Choosing a Product
The SBT2055 trials are rigorous, but four details shape how that evidence applies to supplement selection.
1. The studied strain is SBT2055, not L. gasseri generically
Lactobacillus gasseri encompasses many strains with different properties and different evidence profiles. SBT2055 is the strain behind the abdominal fat data. Most commercial supplements labeled Lactobacillus gasseri do not specify which strain they contain, making it impossible to connect them to the SBT2055 research.
2. Both trials used fermented milk, not capsules
The delivery vehicle in both Kadooka studies was 200g of fermented milk per day. Fermented milk provides live bacteria in a buffered food matrix, with no acidic stomach environment to navigate in the same way a capsule does. Whether capsule-delivered SBT2055 reaches the gut in sufficient viable quantities to produce the same effect has not been tested in a body composition trial. This is a genuine gap between the published evidence and what most supplements deliver.
3. The population was Japanese adults
Both trials enrolled Japanese adults in a BMI range of 24.2–30.7 kg/m2. This demographic may have different baseline gut microbiome composition and dietary context than Western populations. Extrapolating the effect size directly to other populations carries some uncertainty.
4. Effects were reversible after stopping
In the 2010 trial, abdominal fat areas recovered significantly during a 4-week washout period after the intervention ended. The results were contingent on continued consumption, not a sustained shift that persisted after discontinuation.
None of these limitations discredit the SBT2055 research. They are the honest reading of what the trials show, and they matter for setting realistic expectations.
Comparing the Evidence: SBT2055 and B420™
Researchers interested in strain-level human evidence for body fat endpoints have a second strain worth knowing: Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis B420 (B420™). The B420™ data come from post-hoc factorial analysis within the 6-month randomized controlled trial (RCT), not a pre-specified primary outcome. This framing is important for interpreting the strength of the signal.3
