The reduction was specifically in trunk fat, which includes visceral fat around the abdomen.1

The effect was statistically significant and sustained over the study period.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus CGMCC1.3724

This strain was studied in a trial where women took it for 24 weeks while following a weight loss diet. The group taking the probiotic lost significantly more weight and kept it off better than the placebo group. The strain appeared to help maintain weight loss, which is relevant for anyone who has experienced the cycle of losing and regaining.2

Modulating appetite hormones. Gut bacteria produce compounds that influence GLP-1, PYY, and ghrelin, the hormones that regulate hunger and fullness. A healthier microbiome supports better appetite signaling, which makes it easier to maintain a deficit without fighting constant hunger.

Improving insulin sensitivity. Insulin resistance causes your body to store more of what you eat as fat, particularly around the abdomen. Certain probiotic strains have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, helping your body use glucose more efficiently rather than converting it to stored fat.

Visceral Fat

Fat stored deep within the abdominal cavity around your organs. Unlike subcutaneous fat, which sits just under the skin, visceral fat is metabolically active and releases inflammatory compounds. It is the type of fat most strongly linked to metabolic disease and is the most resistant to diet-based fat loss.

Short-Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs)

Compounds produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fiber. The most important SCFAs are butyrate, propionate, and acetate. They serve as fuel for intestinal cells, reduce inflammation, and signal the body to burn fat rather than store it. Higher SCFA production is associated with leaner body composition.

What to Look for in a Probiotic for Stubborn Fat

If you are considering a probiotic to support fat loss, focus on these criteria.

Strain specificity. The strain number matters. Lactobacillus gasseri B420 is not the same as Lactobacillus gasseri in general. Look for products that identify the exact strain and the dose used in clinical studies.

Clinical backing. Choose strains that have been tested in human trials, not just animal studies. B420 has human clinical data supporting its effect on body fat.

CFU count. The dose should match what was used in research. For B420, the effective dose in studies was 10 billion CFU per day.

Prebiotic inclusion. Some studies showed better results when probiotics were combined with prebiotic fiber. Prebiotics feed the beneficial bacteria and help them colonize the gut more effectively.

When Diet Does Not Work
