Which Probiotic Products Are Worth the Money? Cost per Studied Strain, Dose, and 90-Day Use

We priced seven named weight-management probiotics in early September 2026. Ninety-day cost ranges from about $58 to $150. Six of the seven contain a strain that has appeared in a published human weight trial. None has a finished-product trial confirming its own capsule matches that trial's dose, and the cheapest bottle in the group is not one of the six.
What "Worth the Money" Should Actually Measure
Price alone doesn't tell you whether a probiotic is a reasonable buy. Look for these instead.
A named strain with a public identifier. Evidence from one strain doesn't transfer to another, even within the same species. A label that just says "Lactobacillus" or "Bifidobacterium" without a strain code isn't buying you a specific result.
A published human trial on a weight-related endpoint at a known dose. Body fat mass, waist circumference, visceral fat area, or energy intake, measured in people.
A dosing approach that fits how the product is built. A single ingredient can be checked against the exact dose used in its own trial. Multi-strain blends, which describes every product in this matrix to some degree, are harder to line up ingredient-by-ingredient against any one strain's original trial, and are more reasonably judged on whether the headline strain is present, what else the blend adds, and whether the brand is upfront about what isn't broken out.
Clear separation between the main finding and everything else. The headline result versus a smaller follow-up detail, and industry funding versus independent research, both change what a "significant result" means in practice.
The Real-Price Matrix: 7 Named Probiotics Compared Over 90 Days
Prices below use each brand's own website as of September 1, 2026, at the subscription price where one exists, since that's typically the lower recurring price these brands promote over a one-time purchase. Retail pricing shifts with promotions. Pendulum and Provitalize both offer monthly and quarterly billing at different effective daily rates, noted separately below; Provitalize's SBT2055 dose disclosure is inconsistent enough across sources that we don't state a specific figure for it, also noted below.

THIN 30, the cheapest bottle here, has no probiotic strain tied to a weight trial at all; its marketed weight evidence comes from a green tea extract ingredient, not the bacteria. Among the six products that do have a strain tied to a weight trial, Culturelle's $72.87 for 90 days is the cheapest way to buy a tested combination, even though its label doesn't disclose per-strain dose either.
Both Pendulum and Provitalize price their subscriptions differently depending on billing frequency: paying monthly and paying quarterly aren't the same offer, and the quarterly plan is cheaper per day for both brands. Pendulum's quarterly plan runs $132 for 90 days ($147 if you instead pay its $49 monthly price three times); Provitalize's quarterly plan runs $119.25 for 90 days ($127.20 if billed monthly three times at its Subscribe & Save rate). We used the lower, quarterly number for both in the table above; confirm which billing option you're actually selecting at checkout.
On Provitalize's disclosed dose: different pages and listings for Provitalize show different levels of detail on CFU. Some show a 400 mg proprietary blend with the three named strains plus fructo-oligosaccharides and no CFU count; other listings cite a specific per-strain breakdown. As with any supplement, the physical label on the bottle is the authoritative source for exact dose. The table above doesn't state a specific SBT2055 dose because page content alone didn't give us one confirmed figure; if the exact dose matters to your decision, check the supplement facts panel on the bottle itself or ask the brand directly.
Reading the "Studied Dose" Column: Where Each Product Stands
Naming a strain isn't the same as dosing it at the amount that produced a result in people.
Culturelle's SlimBiotics trial is the closest thing here to a tested combination. A 2023 randomized, placebo-controlled trial studied 180 adults with abdominal overweight (176 completed the full analysis) across three groups for three months: the three SlimBiotics strains together, a synbiotic version with added arabic gum fiber, or placebo. Participants took one 6 g sachet twice daily, each targeted to deliver at least 1 billion CFU per strain, for an intended combined total of at least 6 billion CFU per day across the three strains. A post-trial check of the finished product measured the mixture at roughly 5.46 billion CFU per day combined, somewhat below that combined target, though it doesn't tell us whether any individual strain specifically fell short. Body fat mass, the trial's main measure, dropped meaningfully more in the probiotic-only group than placebo; the synbiotic group's result on this measure wasn't meaningful. Body weight and waist circumference also improved in the probiotic-only group. On ultrasound-measured visceral fat, both active groups differed from placebo, with the probiotic-only group's reduction somewhat larger; the trial didn't directly compare the two active groups to each other, so this doesn't establish that the added fiber made things worse, only that its numbers weren't larger on this measure. The synbiotic group did show a meaningful improvement on a separate constipation-symptom score where the probiotic-only group didn't. The retail product also contains added LGG, which wasn't part of this trial, so it's not known whether that changes anything. The study was funded by Slimbiotics GmbH, which holds the strain patent; one author is a co-inventor and consultant for the company.
Daily Nouri's BNR-17 has a trial behind it at an unconfirmed finished-product dose. A 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 90 adults found the high-dose group (10 billion CFU/day) had a meaningfully greater reduction in visceral fat area than placebo.2 Daily Nouri doesn't publish total CFU/day for its capsule, so there's no way to check whether it matches, falls under, or exceeds that dose. That trial was supported by Bioneer Corporation, the strain's originator, along with Korean government research funding.
Provitalize's supporting trial for SBT2055 used a fermented-milk dose that's hard to compare to a capsule at all. The trial gave adults 200 g/day of fermented milk containing 5×10⁸ CFU/g of L. gasseri SBT2055, or roughly 100 billion CFU/day, and found a 4.6% reduction in visceral fat area from baseline in the active group over 12 weeks. That figure reflects change from baseline within the active group, not a head-to-head comparison against the control group's own results. Several authors on that trial were affiliated with Snow Brand Milk Products, which markets the strain. As noted above, page content alone doesn't give a single confirmed CFU figure for this strain in the current Provitalize product, so it isn't possible to line up the capsule's dose against the studied amount from that information alone.
Pendulum's Akkermansia is measured in a different unit than the trial that supports this strain. The relevant human trial gave 10 billion pasteurized A. muciniphila cells per day to adults with insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, and that arm showed a meaningful improvement in insulin sensitivity. Pendulum's label states a 300 million AFU total across five live strains and doesn't break out Akkermansia's individual share within that total. AFU (an activity-based flow-cytometry count) and "cells administered per day" aren't a validated one-to-one conversion, so there's no reliable way to line up the label's number against the trial's dose from public information alone. Several of the trial's authors hold patents related to the strain's use, and two are co-founders of a company built around it, which is worth knowing when reading the result.
Seed DS-01 contains the CECT 8145/BPL1 strain but doesn't sell it as a weight product. Seed's own marketing files this strain under a skin-health blend and doesn't cite the weight trial. The trial used a standardized 100 mg powder delivering 10¹⁰ CFU/day; Seed's label shows this strain sharing a 3.34 billion AFU blend with three others, without an individual breakdown. AFU and CFU aren't measured the same way, so there's no way to directly compare the label's number to the trial's dose, the same unit mismatch that applies to Pendulum's Akkermansia above. Five authors on the supporting trial were employees of ADM/Biopolis or Lifesequencing, worth knowing even though the trial's actual funding came from a Spanish government innovation program (CDTI's CIEN SMARTFOODS initiative) rather than those companies.
THIN 30's marketed weight evidence isn't in the bacteria. Five of its six probiotic strains carry a strain code (Lp-115, Lr-32, La-14, Bi-26, BL-04); we found no published human trial on weight or body composition for any of them. The sixth, an uncoded L. gasseri, can't be matched to any specific trial by strain identity at all. The number in the brand's own marketing, a 90-day, 100-person comparison showing more weight lost on the active arm, comes from a green tea extract ingredient in the formula, not the probiotic blend.7
What people saw in the B420 trial. The trial behind WonderBiotics' lead strain followed 225 adults for 6 months. People who took B420 alongside a fiber source saw a meaningfully greater reduction in body fat than people on placebo. Not everyone in the study followed the protocol as closely as others did, and the strongest results showed up among those who stuck with the full six-month routine consistently, a pattern that's common in supplement research and worth knowing going in. The trial was funded by DuPont Nutrition & Health, the strain's manufacturer at the time; several study authors were DuPont employees.
Whether a Fiber Add-On Is Included, By Product
The B420 trial tested the strain alone and combined with 12 g/day of polydextrose fiber, and the combined version produced the stronger result among people who followed it consistently, though the trial never directly compared the two versions to each other head-to-head. WonderBiotics' capsule includes some polydextrose in the same blend as the probiotic strains, but the total blend size makes it unlikely that it delivers anywhere near 12 grams. Getting closer to the fiber amount paired with B420 in its own trial means adding a fiber source with a known gram count most days, which is why WonderBiotics sells a Daily Fiber Mix as its own product rather than treating a trace amount inside the probiotic capsule as equivalent to a 12-gram dose.
Culturelle's synbiotic version is the one place in this matrix where a fiber add-on was tested directly, at 10 g/day of arabic gum. Against placebo, the probiotic-only version did better on body fat and had a somewhat larger reduction in visceral fat, while the synbiotic version did better on a separate constipation-symptom measure. The two active versions were never statistically compared against each other, so this doesn't settle whether adding fiber helped or hurt overall; the results simply diverge by measure.
Seed's outer capsule layer is described by the brand as a "non-fiber prebiotic," so it isn't a fiber source at all. THIN 30's 150 mg prebiotic blend (chicory root, Jerusalem artichoke, acacia) is a trace amount relative to any fiber dose tested in this literature. Pendulum and Daily Nouri don't list a fiber ingredient. Provitalize's supplement facts panel lists fructo-oligosaccharides, though at an undisclosed amount and with no trial testing that specific addition alongside SBT2055 for weight.

The price covers B420 (the formula's only strain with published weight-specific human data), seven additional named gut-support strains, and a metabolic blend of dihydroberberine and Eriomin® (lemon extract) lemon extract, standardized to 70% eriocitrin.

Before You Buy: Cost, Disclosure, and Population Match
1. What is the 90-day total cost, not the bottle price? Subscriptions, auto-renewal terms, and multi-bottle discounts change the real number substantially in either direction, and different billing frequencies on the same site (monthly versus quarterly, as with Pendulum and Provitalize above) can produce different totals for what looks like the same subscription. Add up what 90 days actually costs before you commit.
2. Does the label disclose CFU per named strain, or only a blend total? Most multi-strain products in this matrix report a blend total rather than breaking out each strain, which is standard for blended formulas. A single-ingredient product should be more directly comparable to its own trial dose.
3. Does the supporting trial's population and duration look anything like you? Kadooka's SBT2055 trial ran in Japanese adults with "obese tendencies." Sánchez's CGMCC 1.3724 trial explicitly excluded postmenopausal women.8 Check the population the strain was actually tested in before you compare prices.
Common Buying Questions
Is the cheapest probiotic ever the better deal?
THIN 30 is the least expensive product in this matrix at $0.65/day. None of its named strains has a weight-specific human trial, so there's no meaningful cost-per-studied-strain figure to calculate for the probiotic component. Cheap can still be a fair price for a general-purpose probiotic; it just isn't evidence for weight-related use here.
Why don't more of these brands disclose exact per-strain CFU?
Reporting total CFU rather than a per-strain breakdown is legal under current supplement labeling rules and standard practice for multi-strain blends across this category, including in WonderBiotics' own formula. Single-ingredient products are generally better suited to a direct per-strain dose comparison; multi-strain blends are more reasonably evaluated on the overall formula.
How long should I try one of these before deciding it's not working?
The trials behind these strains ran 12 weeks (Provitalize's SBT2055 trial, Daily Nouri's BNR-17 trial, Depommier's Akkermansia trial) to 6 months (WonderBiotics' B420 trial). Matching that product's own trial length, paired with the same diet and activity habits you'd otherwise use, is a more defensible timeline than picking a single universal number, since a strain-level trial length doesn't guarantee that a different finished product at a different dose will show results on the same schedule. If you're on a GLP-1 medication or another prescription drug, tell your prescriber before adding any supplement rather than deciding on your own.
How to Choose
The most expensive product in this matrix (Seed) doesn't market its named strain for weight at all, and the cheapest one (THIN 30) has no named strain tied to weight evidence to begin with. Before comparing dollar amounts, check whether a named strain with a published human weight trial is actually present, whether the population it was tested in resembles you, and whether the product is built around a single dose-matched ingredient or a broader multi-strain blend.
